What is a tracking pixel?

A tracking pixel, or a retargeting pixel is a 1x1 pixel graphic, usually hidden, and embedded somewhere in an email or webpage. These are designed as such that they are camouflaged, or invisible to the website visitors or the email recipients. They allow you to gather information about your users, evaluate your marketing efforts, and therefore increase sales.

How does a tracking pixel work?

When a user visits a website, or opens an email, they are indirectly putting in a request for the server to download the tracking pixel attached with the content. It is added using a code in your website’s HTML code or email, which contains an external link to the pixel server. The server then sends the pixel tag to the user's unique IP address and logs it. The users are unaware of this process, this allows for the behavior data about the visitor to be transmitted.

What type of data is obtained and analysed using the tracking pixels?

The following data can be obtained and analyzed using a tracking pixel:

  • Type of operating system used

  • Type of website or email used

  • Type of devices used; desktop or mobile

  • Website activities during a session

  • Screen resolution of a client

  • Type of client used; browser or mail program

  • Time for the website visit or when an email was read

  • IP address; data on the Internet Service Provider and location

What is the purpose of obtaining tracking pixel data?

Tracking pixels data is advantageous for marketeers, website operators and email senders as they can use the behavior data for making their content more user-friendly, interesting, and relevant for their users. They can also measure their campaign's performance, track conversions, and improve their online offers.

How to use tracking pixels with Mailmunch?

Tracking pixels help you send impression and conversion data to your favorite analytics services such as Google Analytics, Facebook, Mixpanel, and others.

There are several different approaches you can choose to add tracking pixels to your Mailmunch campaign.

1. Add Pixel in Forms

Mailmunch allows you to put two types of tracking pixels for each form via behavior step in the campaign builder.

  • View Pixel
These are triggered when a visitor views your form.

  • Subscribe Pixel
These are triggered when a visitor successfully subscribes to your form. You can also pass in subscriber's email address by typing [EMAIL].

2. Add Pixel in Landing Pages

In your landing page, you can put tracking pixels to track when the landing page is viewed or when the user has subscribed via HTML block.

  • Main Page Pixels
These are triggered when a visitor views your landing page.

  • Thank You Page Pixels
These are triggered when a visitor successfully subscribes using a form in your landing page.

3. Site Tracking

These are global pixels that are fired when any of your forms or landing pages is viewed, or when a visitor subscribes. If you have existing pixels on your forms or landing pages, those will fire in addition to the following.
